1 — For backpackers: find & apply
Step 1: Create your account
Right now, you need an account to access the full list of volunteer opportunities.
This helps keep the community safer and makes applications more meaningful for hosts.
Step 2: Search by location + filters
Once you’re in, you can browse volunteer travel opportunities by destination and refine your search using filters.
You can filter by things like dates, perks/advantages, schedule expectations, vibe, and more.
Tip: If you’re flexible on dates, you’ll usually find more options — especially in popular backpacker hubs.
Step 3: Apply in one click
When you find an opportunity that feels right, tap Apply. You’ll write a short message and your profile
will be sent to the host at the same time.
- Introduce yourself in a few lines
- Share your dates and travel style
- Ask any key questions (hours, days off, what’s included)
Step 4: Track your applications
After applying, you’ll see your application listed in your profile. From there, you can follow updates and messages.
Step 5: Host response
The host can either accept your request directly or message you first to ask questions,
confirm details, and make sure it’s a good match.
2 — For hosts: publish & manage offers
Step 1: Register your place
Hosts (like hostels and social places) create an account to publish volunteer opportunities. There isn’t a strict
“verification wall” at signup, but Spixes keeps an active eye on new registrations to protect the community.
Step 2: Create a volunteer offer
To publish an opportunity, hosts fill out a simple offer form with everything backpackers need to know:
- Location, vibe, and what makes the place special
- Tasks and expected hours
- Minimum stay (if any) and availability
- What’s included (bed, meals, perks/advantages)
- Rules and practical details
Step 3: Manage availability & volunteers
Hosts can fully manage their offers and availability:
- Update calendars / open dates
- Limit the number of volunteers
- Edit details anytime
- Pause or archive an offer when needed
Best practice: Clear offers lead to better matches — and fewer misunderstandings on arrival.
3 — Matching, messaging & trust
In-app messaging comes first
Spixes includes built-in messaging so backpackers and hosts can communicate clearly in one place.
Once both sides feel comfortable, they can also exchange contact details (WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.)
to stay in touch more easily.
Trust features that make things safer
Travel exchange works best when expectations are clear and trust is built early. Spixes supports that with:
- Profiles: hosts and backpackers share who they are
- Reviews: both sides can leave feedback after the experience
- Community mindset: respectful exchange, not random “free labor”
⚠️ Important: Always confirm key details in chat before you commit:
hours, days off, what’s included, house rules, and arrival time.
How pricing works (freemium)
Spixes follows a freemium model. The full access to volunteer opportunities is part of the paid experience.
This helps keep the platform sustainable and improves the quality of the community.
4 — Before, during & after volunteering
Before you arrive: align expectations
Once accepted, you’ll receive the host’s predefined instructions. You should still take a moment to confirm the essentials:
- Exact start date and length of stay
- Hours per day / days per week
- Days off
- Accommodation details (bed type, dorm/private, rules)
- Meals/perks and what’s included
- Check-in time and how to get there
During the experience: keep it respectful
Volunteering should feel fair and human. Show up on time, communicate clearly, and respect the place and the people in it.
If anything feels unclear, talk early — most problems are solved with one honest conversation.
Spixes also encourages everyone to follow the principles in the Volunteering Charter, available in the platform.
It’s the shared reference for respect, boundaries, and healthy travel exchange.
Quick mindset: You’re not “working for free” — you’re joining a place for a short chapter of your journey.
After the experience: leave a review
When it’s over, both backpackers and hosts can leave reviews. Honest feedback helps the community stay safe, transparent,
and higher-quality over time.
